Junior Volunteer Honored
— City Council Awards Commendation —
Here's the newspaper article by Brian M. Cuaron as it
appeared in The Orange County Register earlier this month.
The 9-year-old San Juan Capistrano girl was recognized Tuesday night for helping to raise $1,200 for The Ark of San Juan, a local animal-rescue and adoption group. She did it by asking people to donate money to the organization instead of buying her birthday presents the past three years.
She also got people to donate supplies to The Ark, such as collars and leashes.
"Everywhere she goes, she's just surrounded by critters," Mayor Lon Uso said as he handed her a certificate from the city.
A representative of state Assemblywoman Diane Harkey also presented Jordan with an award of recognition.
Jordan said she wanted to help animals just because she likes them. "All of them are my favorite," she said.
Her parents, Jeff and Kathy Parkhurst, helped found The Ark in 2008. Jeff Parkhurst said his family has helped about 30 dogs find homes through the program.
According to her father, Jordan's attitude about giving up birthday presents was: "Enough toys. Let's do something to help the animals."
